After registration, it allows retailers to track private copying levies payable on portable and desktop personal computers (PCs), while manufacturers and distributors can also send the list of serial numbers or service tags to be registered to Artisjus here.
A serial number (sn, s/n, sn#) or - for some models - a service tag is a combination of digits and letters with a length of 6-22 that uniquely identifies the personal computer. At Artisjus, identifying and tracking royalty payments for personal computers is based on serial numbers or service tags.
According to European directives, private copying of music, movies, images, and literary works is allowed, but only if this freedom is balanced by "fair compensation". Hungary – like most European countries – manages this with a flat fee payable after the turnover of blank image and sound carriers, so that Artisjus, HUNGART, EJI, FILMJUS, and MAHASZ can deliver the fee to the authors, performers, and producers of music, movies, and other works.
Five collective management organizations perform the distribution, each based on its own distribution rules available on its website. The distribution rules are established by the membership of the collective management associations, i.e., the right holders themselves, based on their internal democratic functioning.
